In the 1700s, Charlotte established itself as a trading post along two major Native American trading routes. After the Civil War, it grew into a cotton processing center and a railroad hub. In World War I, the federal government established Camp Greene in the area, bringing with it a large military presence.

Employment trends look very positive in Mecklenburg County. Over the last 13 years, employment in Mecklenburg County has grown 25 percent, compared to 13 percent nationwide.
