Philadelphia was once called "The Workshop of the World," manufacturing everything from bottle tops to snow sleds. In fact, manufacturing once provided half of the city’s jobs. But the Philadelphia manufacturing industry slowly lost its steam, as factories moved elsewhere. Today, manufacturing accounts for a mere five percent of employment in Philadelphia.
The city’s employment market today is dominated by "eds and meds." Education and health care companies make up at least half of the employers in Philadelphia. In fact, education, health care and social assistance account for 154,000 jobs here, more than double any other industry. Other employment sectors include finance, government, information technology, law and transportation.
This is just a sample of what you'll find in the complete Philadelphia guide.
