Salt Lake City’s economy has evolved over the past 100 years from only a few businesses to a town with many industries. Traditionally, the major employers in town were the Mormon Church, the railroad and mining operations. The local workforce today has much more to choose from. At least eight major industries fuel the local economy.
Salt Lake City’s businesses appear to be either very small or very large. Approximately half of Utah residents work for companies with more than 500 employees. On the other hand, one in six Utahans is self-employed.
Three Fortune 1000 companies are headquartered in Salt Lake City, as well as one of the nation’s largest private companies. Chemical manufacturer Huntsman has annual revenues of more than $13 billion. Energy magnate Questar brings in about $2 billion every year. Sinclair Oil is one of the nation’s largest private companies. Finally, industrial bank Zions Bancorporation employs more than 3,000 Utahans.
This is just a sample of what you'll find in the complete Salt Lake City guide.
